Airplane Life Jackets

So, I had the occassion to fly to London for an NAS meeting on Friday.

Having got on the plane, the Stewardesses began thier safety demonstration. You know the stuff, waving their arms over the place showing where the exits are.

Then, came the bit about the life jackets. “Pull over your head, tie in a double bow at the sides” then the bit that got me thinking. “There’s a light on it and a whistle for attracting attention

In this day and age – a light and a whistle?

Where’s the GPS??

Just look what happened to Tom Hanks in Castaway. Did the light and whistle help him? Five years on a deserted desert island? Methinks not.

Come on guys, we’re in the 21st century now and there’s no mobile phone masts at sea so I can’t text someone to help.

Skimming Stones

Well, a wonderful fact found out today on the BBC programme “Coast”.

Set in 1992, the world record for “bounces” with a skimming stones is……..38!!!

Apparently, according to research, the best angle for the stone to hit the water is 20 degrees. It’s not yet known what the perfect shape of the stone is, although at least one flat surface is essential!

Daldorch Visit

Daldorch House Appeal

We attended the official opening of the senior campus at Daldorch House School and Continuing Education Centre today.

Wow what a place! The school is set within 11 acres of idyllic Ayrshire woodlands. The setting really is something to behold.

The new senior campus includes 35 residential apartments including some bedsit accomodation for the more able folk.

The classrooms are very low stimulus with very little in the way of distractions save for cupboards for students work. Even the computer is locked away out of site when not in use.

The is an enterprise cottage where the folks learn some manufacturing and indeed they are making some fine flower troughs for the new Girvan station in conjunction with British Rail. The cottge also includes an Arts & Crafts room and a large “allotment” where veg and herbs etc are growing for use in the students cooking.

A big congrats must go to Shona and her staff at the school and indeed the funraising team for all there efforts to finance the project!
